It’s easy to get lost in big, complicated projects, like capital campaigns. When you’re on the verge of getting lost and not understanding how your fundraising all fits together, there’s nothing like a clear, simple picture to help you make sense of it all.
I've created a simple, attractive image of how capital campaigns work. It lays out the entire process in eight simple segments:
- Pre-campaign planning
- Feasibility study
- Plan campaign
- Solicit top gifts
- Campaign kickoff
- Solicit lower level gifts
- Celebrate
- Follow through
My pre-campaign coaching clients find that this campaign timeline helps their board members understand how a capital campaign works. Blow it up big and post it on the wall so you and your staff and board members can refer to it often.
Of course, there’s much more to know about each section of your campaign. But this graphic road map will certainly help.
As Sandy Wright of Friends of the Gorge recently wrote me,
I have it printed on 11x17" and taped to the wall by my computer. It keeps me sane. Otherwise, I feel like I need to do everything at once. And it's especially handy when board members say, "We need to get this campaign going," and I feel my blood pressure rising. I just point to the timeline and explain to them that we are right on target, and we don't go public until we are 60 percent of goal!
