Leaders are familiar with the initial steps necessary to turn around a faltering organization. Develop a vision, communicate the vision to promote buy-in and execute the vision. In the world of nonprofits, where much of the work is provided by volunteers, donors and staff seeking aspirational satisfaction as opposed to financial, there are additional tactics that can be considered to turning operations around.
Careful accountability
Accountability can be tricky in a nonprofit. Seeking to assign blame for mistakes made in the past will most likely be counterproductive. It is rare that a volunteer or donor will be forced out. Depending on the culture of the nonprofit, stakeholders may not be sympathetic to hear that well-intentioned employees or the CEO are the culprits for failure.
