An avant-garde initiative to provide housing for homeless teenagers in Lane County received a cutting-edge gift from a Eugene tech firm this week: a pledge of $2 million worth of bitcoin, the novel nongovernmental digital currency.
A coalition of local nonprofit agencies, including the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, has been working for more than a year on converting a former church on Willamette Street in south Eugene into a 13-room youth home for girls.
Before that facility has even opened its doors, information technology trainer CBT Nuggets has agreed to foot the entire construction bill for the next envisioned project: a separate 20-room facility for homeless boys between 16 and 18.
