The Indian government has added a prominent American charity, the Ford Foundation, to a list of groups that may not give money to Indian organizations without government permission, according to an official letter posted on the website of an Indian news channel, NDTV.
The letter, dated Thursday and signed by an under secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, said the government sought to ensure that foreign contributions to Indian groups are used "for bona fide welfare activities without compromising on concerns for national interest and security."
