InsideClimate News — a 5-year-old nonprofit news site dedicated to covering the environment — was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for its series on a 2010 pipeline oil spill in Michigan's Kalamazoo River. Sig Gissler, the administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, acknowledged that InsideClimate News was not as well-known as past online site winners such as Huffington Post and ProPublica. But he said the site exemplified a larger trend among the winners — a commitment to watchdog journalism.
