Whether they're eager to support or eager to resist President-elect Donald Trump in 2017, the Washington, D.C., region's nonprofits are using Inauguration Day as a way to raise awareness among their donors or to reach out to those they serve.
Many nonprofits I reached out to said they aren’t playing any role in the day’s events—and emphasized a politically neutral stance about the president-elect. For example, Steve Taylor, United Way Worldwide's senior vice president and counsel for public policy, made sure to tell me the group is “politically agnostic” and only hopes for a peaceful transfer of power and a "joyful celebration of our democracy" that day. Personally, he said he will spend the day trying to avoid traffic.
