THON Cancels Last Canning Trip, Cites Safety and Forced-Fundraising Concerns

In a decision that will affect fundraising efforts for THON 2016, the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon has canceled the third canning weekend of the season.

One of the two main reasons for the cancellation is the inability to ensure volunteer travel safety. The second reason is “forced fundraising,” a term coming from a letter sent out Tuesday by THON executive director Katie Mailey.

“Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been brought to light on forced fundraising and how some students feel the pressure to fundraise for THON in the community,” Mailey said. “We want to be able to address this as a bigger issue in the THON community, and that’s going to take some time to do.”
