Faced with the loss of most of its fundraising staff, University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) is poised to keep these employees by dipping into the money they raise.
UNCG officials talked last week with trustees about the possibility of levying a fee on its endowment, a university-wide savings account that provides millions of dollars each year for student scholarships and professorships.
The state budget deal announced Monday would cap state spending on UNC system advancement programs—the fundraising operations, in other words—at $1 million a year starting in 2016-17.
Thirteen of North Carolina’s 16 public universities exceed that $1 million cap, according to a recent UNC system report.
