A charity created by the New York Yankees to help poor neighborhoods has sent most of its money to wealthier areas, the New York Times reports.
The charity, New Yankee Stadium Community Benefits Fund, was created for areas of the South Bronx affected by the team’s construction in 2006 of a new stadium, which took more than 25 acres of public parkland away from those communities. The charity was intended to distribute nearly $40 million in cash grants and sports equipment, as well as 600,000 baseball tickets, to community organizations.
The fund’s annual report has never been publicly released, nor have details on the recipients of the 15,000 game tickets supposed to be distributed each year.
