Website Tips for Older Donors

According to recent statistics, three out of five donors over the age of 66 have donated on the Web in the past six months, says Himanshu Sareen, founder and CEO of website, apps and software platform builder Icreon Tech, and “historically they give more and much larger gifts than young donors — we can’t ignore them,” he adds.

For the older crowd, accessibility is the No. 1 key, Sareen says. Nonprofits must create an experience that’s very clear — “not just from a content perspective, but take into consideration that older people may want to modify font size” to enhance their viewing capabilities. To create that clear experience for older donors, Sareen suggests the following:

Use plenty of white space.
Don’t have a background video playing.
Ensure navigation is crystal-clear.
Focus on Facebook for social media to direct older donors to your website — they don’t engage much on other social media platforms.

Attractive, modern, fully functional websites are mandatory for nonprofits that want to be successful online. Each stakeholder — including donors (individual, corporate or potential), volunteers, potential grant decision-makers, the press and partners — has different needs, but all share the common expectation that when they arrive at your website, they'll be able to quickly find what they're looking for.
