In the summer/fall of 2014, ASI conducted a survey of association/membership organizations as well as not-for-profits to uncover the latest trends in operational performance. Surveys were distributed via email to senior-level executives at organizations of all sizes and sectors and consisted of 20 questions spanning five primary interest areas: demographics, performance, technology, website/mobile and goals. Key findings included:
Executives are most challenged by an inability to properly measure member engagement and inadequate reporting tools. Their top goals relate to increasing member engagement, retention and new member acquisition, while improving member intelligence/reporting capabilities and enhancing online/mobile self-service are their most pressing priorities. Other interesting notes include:
- 40 percent of all survey participants report they offer no mobile options to their members
- 67 percent have seen declining or stagnant retention rates in the past year
- 32 percent don't know how their overall engagement rate has changed in the past year
Fundraising professionals are concerned with a lack of mobile and online fundraising capabilities and their inability to adequately measure donor engagement. Increasing donations, acquiring new donors and expanding donor engagement are their primary goals. Their highest priorities relate to accessing better donor intelligence and leveraging online/mobile fundraising opportunities. Additional findings include:
- 30 percent of executives surveyed don't even know their overall retention rate
- 45 percent have declining or stagnant retention rates, yet improving donor retention is not an important priority
- 40 percent acknowledge they offer no mobile options while another 29 percent report they generate up to half of all their donations online
