September 8, 2009 ─ To meet the tax needs of clients in the nonprofit sector, Ballard Spahr LLP has formed a tax practice group, Nonprofit Organizations.
Attorneys in this group will address federal and state tax issues, and provide related legal services, for 501(c)(3) organizations as well as tax-exempt governmental units and other types of tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations. Ballard Spahr represents a range of nonprofit clients, including hospitals and health systems, universities, private foundations, and trade associations.
“One of a nonprofit organization’s most valuable assets is its tax-exempt status,” said Nancy Lashnits, a partner in Ballard Spahr’s Phoenix office and chair of the new group. “Statutory and regulatory changes that may affect this status are complex and ongoing. We look forward to helping our clients develop and prosper during these challenging times.”
In a typical year, Ballard Spahr attorneys form at least 30 nonprofit organizations and qualify them as tax-exempt. The new group will also counsel clients on IRS compliance, joint ventures with for-profit entities, charitable solicitations, and the full range of taxation issues. Their work is supported by attorneys with specific experience in related areas, such as health care, higher education, real estate, and labor and employment.
