CCS Fundraising, a provider of strategic fundraising consulting, proudly announces the publication of the 2024 Philanthropic Landscape, offering a comprehensive analysis of the latest trends and developments shaping philanthropy in the United States. As the 13th edition of the annual report that serves as a resource for nonprofits and associations, this year's findings delve into key areas, such as the resilience of donor generosity, the rise of corporate philanthropy, the continued adoption of AI, and the influence of political dynamics on charitable giving.
The report provides timely insights into the philanthropic sector, showcasing that despite economic uncertainties and inflation, U.S. charitable contributions in 2023 reached an unprecedented $557.2 billion in current dollars. The findings highlight the unwavering commitment of donors across sectors, with nine out of ten charitable sectors showing growth.
Tom Kissane, Vice Chair of CCS Fundraising and Executive Sponsor of the 2024 report, emphasized the importance of adaptability and innovation in today’s philanthropic landscape: "What we’re witnessing is a testament to the resilience of the nonprofit sector. Despite economic and geopolitical challenges, donors and organizations are finding creative ways to connect and drive impact. This year’s report captures not only the trends but the spirit of collaboration and ingenuity that are essential in today’s environment."
The report discusses additional essential findings from across the field of philanthropic research, including:
- The top global philanthropy causes in 2023 included disaster relief, health, and human rights.
- Though individual giving, the largest share of total giving, grew by 1.6%, total donors dropped 3.4%.
- North America was again home to the most high net worth individuals.
- Foundation giving surpassed $100 billion for the second year in a row.
- There are now an estimated 2 million Donor-advised Funds (DAFs) in the US.
- Corporate philanthropy as a giving source increased to $36.3 billion but remained the smallest share of total giving.
- Charitable giving has increased in nine of the last ten presidential election years.
- Building four pillars of AI readiness – People & Culture, Centralized Data, Global Data Governance, and Ethics & Security – can enhance fundraising success.
"The rapid integration of AI into fundraising is transforming how nonprofits engage with their donor bases.” said Christina Mathis, Senior Vice President of CCS and Co-Chair of the report. “Digital platforms are not only enhancing communication but are also unlocking new potential for long-term donor retention and relationship building. This report serves as a guide for organizations to harness these technologies while staying mission-focused.”
In addition to the significant focus on innovation, Adam Miller, Managing Director of CCS and Co-Chair of the report, highlighted the impact of global and national dynamics: "Philanthropy in the U.S. continues to lead globally, but we are increasingly influenced by international trends. This year’s report explores the intersection of local giving with global impact and the potential effects of an election year on donor behavior. We aim to equip nonprofits with the data and insights needed to navigate these complexities successfully."
The 2024 Philanthropic Landscape Report includes new chapters on sector-specific giving, giving during an election year, and creating an AI-ready culture within nonprofits. With expert insights and data-driven analysis, the report serves as a pivotal resource for nonprofit leaders, development professionals, and philanthropists seeking to maximize their impact in the coming year.
