EmpowHer Institute named April Ryan as the keynote speaker for their inaugural Black Women Nonprofit Leaders Forum. Ryan, the longest-serving African American female White House correspondent in history, currently works as the White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief for TheGrio, and can be seen regularly on CNN as a political analyst. Her most recent book, "Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem" (Amistad, October 2022), examines how Black women leaders combat racism and sexism.
EmpowHer Institute’s Black Women Nonprofit Leaders Forum addresses the misogynoir Black women face in nonprofit leadership roles from a solution-driven perspective. The Forum invites Black women nonprofit executives, senior managers, directors, and board members from across California to gather in Los Angeles on May 25, 2023 for a day dedicated to healing from the trauma of misogynoir and learning from industry experts who are pioneering nonprofit business practices to fix the systems that create and uphold this trauma.
“Misogynoir is a pandemic in the nonprofit sector. While nonprofits are increasingly hiring Black women to serve in leadership roles, few are critically examining their hiring or business practices to ensure that once Black women step into these positions, they are adequately supported to succeed.
We see Black women hit the glass cliff time and again – resulting in swift terminations, or quitting, early retirement, and transitioning into entrepreneurship as survival mechanisms to limit the impacts of the misogynoir we experience. The consequence of staying in these roles can often be long-term health issues from the chronic exposure to trauma.
EmpowHer Institute is honored to have April Ryan serve as our keynote speaker for the first inaugural Black Women Nonprofit Leaders Forum because of her history of bravely speaking out against the misogynoir she has experienced. She is a powerful advocate for Black women and we are thrilled to partner with her for this forum,” said Dawn L. Brown, President and CEO of EmpowHer Institute.
Tickets to EmpowHer Institute’s Black Women Nonprofit Leaders Forum are available online and media passes are available for journalists to attend from 8 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. The first 75 women to purchase tickets will receive a free copy of April Ryan’s book, Black Women Will Save the World: An Anthem.
