On April 10, FundRaising Success is hosting its second annual Engage Conference. Engage is the only case-study-focused fundraising conference focusing on the keys to success from organizations that have successfully made the leap from just-getting-by nonprofits to powerhouse organizations. Leading up to Engage, we will be highlighting content from the participating organizations and speakers that we've published over the years.
When we here at FundRaising Success decided to launch our first-ever live conference last year, we wanted a name that truly captures the essence of fundraising and the atmosphere we hoped to provide. Thus, Engage was born (from the mind of Editor-in-Chief Margaret Battistelli Gardner), as fundraising is all engaging donors, prospects, staff, volunteers, program recipients and the community at large.
Engagement has been at the forefront of the fundraising sector since its inception and is such an integral part of the job that Tom Gaffny, principal at Tom Gaffny Consulting, named his 2008 DMA Nonprofit Federation Washington Nonprofit Conference session, "'E' Is for Engagement: 65 Organizations, A Case Study." In the session, he shared these 12 online fundraising best practices:
- Be relevant. Be local.
- Highlight video on your website.
- Engage constituents (quizzes, games, video, etc.).
- Leverage techniques that work in the mail (matching gifts, headlines, Post-its, etc.).
- Send information in bite-sized chunks.
- Work at channel integration.
- Personalize your organization.
- Be visual.
- Say thank you in different ways.
- Ask “friends” to get the word out.
- Be timely. Be there.
- Highlight your partners.
Given both the title of his session some years ago and his remarkable fundraising career, it's only appropriate that Gaffny will join in to present Food For The Poor's case study session at the second annual Engage Conference.
