Philanthrodating?
There's no doubt the Internet has changed the fundraiser's toolbox. Not only can organizations raise funds from individuals with the click of a button on their Web sites, but the Web enables supporters to raise funds while doing everyday functions like using search engines. Add to that list, now, donating while dating.
A recently launched site called GiveAndDate.com intended for socially conscious, single New Yorkers that carries the tagline "Find love and save the world, all before lunch," pairs philanthropy with dating, and is coming to a city near you.
Monthly subscriptions to the dating site cost $12, half of which goes to the its four partner charities — Williamsburg Collegiate, Animal Haven, Solar One and the Council on the Environment of New York City. In exchange for a donation of $1 or more — half of which, again, goes to a partner charity — users can pass a note to other users they're interested in, in the hopes of setting up a date. The site even makes clear that the person receiving the note will see how much the note sender donates, adding an interesting peer pressure element to the donation. Willing users also can volunteer to have their profiles featured on the site to generate greater funds in support of one of the charities.
The site features hip profiles of each charity it supports, with links directly to the charity's page. It also complements its online outreach by helping to educate New Yorkers about its partner charities through cocktail parties and fundraising events.
Founders of the site plan to expand it to a dozen or so cities in the next six months, including Miami, Denver and Seattle. Nonprofits interested in partnering with GiveAndDate should contact Katherine Bilby.
Seeking Ideas for Improving "Thons"
The Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council is looking for ideas for successful athletic fundraising events from nonprofit fundraisers.
It's asking fundraisers to send short descriptions (100 words or less) of ideas to raise more money, cut costs or better manage local or national "thon" fundraising programs. Those who submit ideas will receive a $25 credit toward a RWRFC membership or registration for the group's 2010 conference.
Those who submit ideas that are selected for publication by the Council will be awarded a $25 Starbucks gift card. Ideas should be e-mailed to info@runwalkride.com by Oct. 30, and be sure to include your contact information.
