GoFundMe unveiled its 2024 Year in Help report, celebrating the generosity of individuals and nonprofits worldwide who helped each other throughout the year. With an average of two donations made every second, the report showcases the most generous places globally, significant moments that drove unprecedented help, and trends shaping the future of giving.
“The desire to help each other transcends borders, languages, and cultures. Our global community has shown time and again that help is central to our humanity,” said GoFundMe CEO, Tim Cadogan. “This year, we saw tens of millions of people step up to support one another—whether by starting fundraisers, donating to an individual or nonprofit, or sharing the causes they care about. Even when individuals couldn’t give financially, they found ways to make a difference, driving remarkable support through more than 55 million shares.”
In 2024, the GoFundMe community responded to critical needs and championed meaningful causes worldwide. GoFundMe donors helped families struggling with rising housing costs and supported fundraisers for “essential expenses”, which quadrupled in the U.S. this year. GoFundMe’s global community also celebrated shared moments like the Olympics and Paralympics, with more than 15,500 donors helping athletes from 34 countries achieve their dreams. Over 1.7 million people globally took action to strengthen their communities, with the number of U.S. fundraisers focused on building a "brighter future" more than doubling.
When natural disasters struck, communities came together to help, raising nearly $235 million globally for relief and recovery efforts. With the exception of Giving Tuesday, October 1st stood out as the most generous day of the year, as hundreds of thousands of people lent a supporting hand following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Throughout 2024, donors from more than 215 countries came together to raise over $300 million for those impacted by the crisis in the Middle East. Mobilizing quickly in moments of crisis to raise and distribute immediate support for individuals and communities, GoFundMe’s strategic partner, GoFundMe.org, granted more than $11 million in its fiscal year 2024 through funds for natural disaster relief, education, weather resilience, and other charitable purposes.
This year’s report celebrates the global spirit of generosity with an in-depth look at the most generous regions worldwide while highlighting GoFundMe’s expansion into new markets. With the additions of Mexico and Puerto Rico, GoFundMe unlocked new avenues of support for millions, extending its mission to even more communities around the world. The year also marked more than $1 billion in donations raised for Australian causes on GoFundMe since expanding to the country in 2015. Ireland retained its position as the world's most generous country on GoFundMe for the sixth consecutive year, while Vermont led the United States as the most generous state for the third year running, ranking highest in donors per capita.
