Harris Corporation Recognized by Foreign Policy Association for Commitment to Corporate Responsibility
MELBOURNE, Fla., June 5, 2009 — Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) was among five companies recently awarded the prestigious Foreign Policy Association's (FPA) Corporate Social Responsibility Award. Howard L. Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harris Corporation, accepted the award on behalf of the company and its 15,000 employees during the FPA's annual dinner on May 27, 2009, in New York City.
The award is presented to individuals and companies who are committed to good corporate citizenship in the communities they serve. Other companies receiving the award were: Archer Daniels Midland Company, ARTOC Group for Investment and Development, The Coca-Cola Company; and McDonald's Corporation.
"Our social responsibility programs are an integral part of our strategy for sustained growth, and we are committed to being a trusted neighbor in the communities we call home and in the world at large," Lance said. "This award honors Harris employees around the world who are dedicated to delivering superior value in both their workplace and in their communities."
Harris corporate responsibility programs are far-reaching, with a focus on support for quality education, particularly in the areas of math and science. "Educating young people in math and science is vital to maintaining our nation's technological advantage," he said. "We have an ever-increasing need for highly trained, highly capable technical talent, which fuels our motivation to develop programs that inspire our nation's youth to study math and science."
Harris fosters the growth of technical educational initiatives through donations of cash and equipment, through the involvement of Harris employees in mentoring students, and sponsorship of teacher enrichment initiatives. Over the past four fiscal years, the Harris Foundation has made contributions, grants and pledges to support higher education of science, math and engineering at the local, state and national level totaling more than $9 million.
The company also devotes significant funding to student organizations that promote academic and professional success among minority engineering students, to K-12 outreach programs, and to organizations that support U.S. troops. In addition, Harris employees donated more than 68,000 volunteer hours during the past year, helped to raise more than $1.1 million for the United Way of Brevard County, Florida, and donated more than $200,000 to various health, educational and cultural non-profit organizations through the Harris Employee Gift Matching Program.
