Also from the DMA Nonprofit Federation 2006 Annual Washington Nonprofit Conference: Bobbie Dean, CFRE, and vice president for development at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and Girls Town U.S.A., an Amarillo, Texas-based Christian organization that provides professional programs and services to families to aid in child development, had these tips for organizations looking to improve their interactions with donors:
1) Information is critical. "Donors and their information are organizational assets," Dean said, adding that organizations should be aware of things such as a donor's educational level and the number of children he has.
2) Break down silos. Departments within an organization must work together for the whole organization's benefit. "Donors don't belong to departments or individuals within the organization," he said.
3) Understand your donors. Donors come in all frequencies and sizes. Whether weekly, monthly, annual or bi-annual, giving regular gifts, major or planned gifts or bequests, donors should be understood and respected.
4) Say thanks. Thank each donor for every gift she gives, Dean said. Donors are people giving to people — you should thank them accordingly and treat them as you would a friend or family member.
5) Educate prospects and donors about your organization's mission. This helps donors to become better advocates for your cause, and helps them feel part of your efforts.
