Keep Recipients Connected

A white No. 10 carrier envelope mailed blind and devoid of any design elements can be intriguing. But so too is an envelope decked out in four colors, rife with graphics and teasers, like this mailing sent by Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Mary.

The outer of this mailing features a pastel-colored illustration of Padre Pio, right hand raised in a blessing motion, surrounded by flowers of all colors. It’s a strong image. The illustration spans the face of the envelope, reminiscent of a religious fresco. Teasers above the address window read, “Receive the miraculous intercession of Padre Pio … Join us in a special Novena of Masses honoring this revered Capuchin Saint.” And in the lower right-hand corner of the envelope is the teaser, “Free Padre Pio Medal Enclosed!” below a thumbnail picture of the medal.

Most of the elements inside the envelope — the reply device, BRE and double-sided letter — are plain and don’t continue the high-color, illustrated theme introduced on the outer. The only element to do so is a 3-inch-by-4.5-inch prayer card that replicates the four-color illustrated image of Padre Pio on its front panel, and connects the recipient with what most likely drew him into the mailing to start. The glossy prayer card is printed on card stock and opens to show a “Novena Prayer to Padre Pio” printed down the inner, left-hand panel and the Padre Pio medal affixed with tape to the right-hand panel.

The Capuchin Franciscans have managed to create a mailing with an outer envelope that attracts recipients’ attention, and continue the theme that attracted their attention inside the envelope without breaking the bank.
