Leading Philanthropists to Examine How to Democratize Philanthropy in the Face of Global Crises
The annual Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF) will return in-person Nov. 1 – 2 at the Golden Gate Club in San Francisco’s Presidio to convene purpose-driven, action-oriented philanthropists, foundation executives, social impact investors and thought leaders to explore the role of the philanthropic sector in stewarding collaboration and how the process of democratizing philanthropy relates to broader systemic issues at play in emerging global emergencies.
The democratic, climate and public health crises we collectively face have exposed the cracks in our systems, revealing a global paradigm that is unsustainable and leaves behind the world’s most marginalized. But these crises also bring an opportunity to challenge our thinking and recognize a shift in power that is both equitable and builds the collective power necessary for systemic change. Entitled “Shifting Power, Collective Action,” the #GPF2022 conference will gather the philanthropic community together to deep-dive into what is at the core cause of these fault lines and identify common strategies that have the potential to create true and lasting change.
“From the global rise of authoritarianism to unchecked climate change to the tragic impacts of COVID-19, it’s clear that our world is at a critical inflection point,” said Philip Yun, President and CEO of World Affairs. “#GPF2022 is our chance as leaders in the philanthropic space to finally step up in solidarity with local communities and heed the urgent call to take action and empower those on the frontlines.”
Indigenous Amazonian leader Nemonte Nenquimo, named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2020, will headline #GPF2022. Other speakers include Hilary Pennington, Executive Vice President of Global Programs at Ford Foundation; David Litt, author and former presidential speechwriter; Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder in Residence at PolicyLink; Yonis Hassan, Co-Founder and CEO of Justice Fund and many more.
In addition to plenaries, working groups, speed networking sessions and lightning talks, GPF is excited to feature immersive, tech-enabled portals that will bring internationally-dispersed participants face-to-face in life-size form, as if standing next to each other in the same room. Brought to GPF by Shared Studios, the portals will enable conference attendees in San Francisco to facilitate global connections, build empathy and explore different perspectives, local nuance, common challenges and potential for coordinated responses to climate change with experts and activists in East Africa and the Caribbean.
