Narrowing of Gender Gap Slowed in FY 2007, New Guidestar Nonprofit Compensation Report Shows Proportion of Female Nonprofit CEOs Comparable to FY 2006 Numbers
WASHINGTON, DC and WILLIAMSBURG, VA, September 29, 2009 — The proportion of women heading nonprofits grew only 1 percent between FY 2006 and FY 2007, the 2009 GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report shows.
Women held 47 percent of nonprofit CEO positions in 2007, compared to 46 percent in 2006 and 41 percent in 2005. As was true in previous years, in 2007 females were more likely to head smaller nonprofits, holding 56 percent of CEO positions at organizations with expenses of $1 million or less and 36 percent at nonprofits with expenses greater than $1 million. In 2006, women headed 55 percent of nonprofits with expenses of $1 million or less and 36 percent of those with expenses greater than $1 million. In 2005, females led 50 percent of organizations with expenses of $1 million or less and 34 percent of those with expenses greater than $1 million.
