New York Life Foundation Awards $400,000 to NPower
NEW YORK, N.Y., July 26, 2012 - The New York Life Foundation today announced a two-year, $400,000 grant to expand NPower's workforce development program, Technology Service Corps (TSC), in New York City and Texas. TSC provides young adults, ages 18 to 25, with training and careers in information technology (IT).
"New York Life has demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and expansion of NPower's programs and services," said NPower's CEO, Stephanie Cuskley. "Our partnership undoubtedly will provide a powerful boost to our mission to help young adults build brighter futures through careers in IT."
"The Foundation is proud to support a program that is helping to foster promising futures through the power of technology," said Chris Park, president of the New York Life Foundation.
TSC, a free program that runs 22 weeks, teaches PC configuration, networking, trouble-shooting, customer service, and the "soft skills" needed in a business setting, such as effective communication. In addition, students receive support through a mentoring program, internships, and school and job placement services. Almost 90 percent of recent program graduates are employed, continuing their education or both.
NPower has provided the TSC program in Brooklyn for more than ten years; last year it began in Harlem and will launch in Dallas early next year. The New York Life Foundation's grant will support the Harlem program and establish the Dallas program, which will also serve military veterans who need additional education/skill building and work experience.
New York Life's Corporate Information employees have volunteered with NPower in the past through NPower's Community Corps, which matches IT and business experts with nonprofit organizations and schools in need of IT support.
