(Press release, Dec. 17, 2014) — The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation's leading cancer research funding organizations, is pleased to announce proceeds of Dick Vitale's latest book, "It's Awesome Baby! 75 Years of Memories and a Lifetime of Opinions on the Game I Love," will benefit pediatric cancer research. Covering Vitale's career as a coach and announcer, the book includes personal memories, insights and much more. The proceeds will be added to the more than $12 million Vitale has raised for pediatric cancer research through his annual gala for The V Foundation.
"I absolutely pinch myself when I reflect back on memories of growing up as a young man chasing my dreams. My life has surpassed any dream I ever had," said Vitale. "And now my goal is to give back, raising dollars for kids battling cancer."
Written by Vitale with longtime sports columnist Dick Weiss as well as writer and editor Joan Williamson, "It's Awesome Baby!" offers private insight on everything from his coaching experience at Rutgers University and the Detroit Pistons to his 35 years as the voice of college basketball at ESPN. The hardback book also contains never-before-seen photos as well as his thoughts on basketball today.
"No one is more passionate in the quest to help children with cancer than Dick Vitale," said Susan Braun, CEO of The V Foundation. "Sharing his life's journey and donating the proceeds to pediatric cancer research is another way for Dick to share his passion, and it demonstrates his remarkable generosity."
Renowned for his passion and enthusiasm for basketball, Vitale brings the same spirit and dedication to the fight against cancer. The Dick Vitale Gala, one of The V Foundation's signature events, annually draws celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment to raise funds and awareness. The 2015 Dick Vitale Gala will be held on Friday, May 15, at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, Florida. The 10th annual event will honor Syracuse University head men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith and Florida State University head football coach Jimbo Fisher.
