Sheridan College Raises $37 Million; Smashes Fundraising Goal by Over $7 Million
OAKVILLE, ON, June 3, 2009 — Sheridan College closed off an ambitious
three-year fundraising campaign by smashing through its goal of $30 million
and raising $37 million for its campuses in Oakville and Brampton. The Student
Capital Campaign was launched in 2006 with the goal of raising funds to meet
the space and technology demands of Sheridan's growing student body.
"This is an outstanding success for Sheridan and our students. Much of
the money raised is already at work and students are seeing the benefit every
day," said Dr. Robert Turner, President and CEO of Sheridan College. "The
support from the community of businesses and people in Oakville and Brampton has been overwhelming and our thanks go out to every one of our donors. We're grateful for the commitment they've shown to Sheridan as an important educator that plays an important role in Ontario turning students into career-ready graduates."
The funds raised have gone toward four priority projects and areas at
Sheridan. They've already helped build the Sheridan Animation Centre on
Sheridan's Oakville campus where 450 animation students hone their craft each year; the Sheridan Centre for Healthy Communities in Brampton - home to Sheridan's many health care and community service programs; the new Davis Campus student learning commons; and, meeting the advancing technology an equipment needs throughout programs at Sheridan.
"I'm proud to have been a part of this campaign," said Peter Gilgan,
President and CEO of Mattamy Homes and Co-Chair of the Student Capital
Fundraising Campaign. "This success is a testament to the hard work of many at Sheridan, its fundraising team, our campaign cabinet volunteers and of course the many people, organizations and businesses that supported us. Above all I think it shows colleges play a vital role in business and the community, and even in tough times people are ready and willing to throw their financial support behind Sheridan."
Nicholas Offord, President of The Offord Group and one of Canada's most
experienced and respected experts in institutional fundraising added:
"Sheridan's ability to raise private money has been exceptional. Its track
record of securing large gifts from corporations and individuals surpasses
just about every other college in Canada, and is certainly on par with
university-level advancement programs."
Sheridan Animation Centre
State-of-the-art animation requires equally sophisticated facilities. The
Sheridan Animation Centre was designed in consultation with faculty and
industry experts with an emphasis on promoting both individual and group
learning. The result is a facility that complements the specialized needs of
both classical and digital animation. The 37,000 square foot facility is home
to 450 students each year from Canada and abroad. It features multiple studios for production work, a new digital stop-motion animation facility, a myriad of classrooms and drafting studios, as well as a powerful rendering farm.
Centre for Healthy Communities (CHC)
CHC brings together in one location programs that focus on the physical,
mental and psychosocial health of individuals and communities. By
concentrating health and wellness education and training in one facility and
exposing this set of diverse, but related, professions to each other, the
result is better trained and well-rounded professionals. The Centre is home to
programs that educate Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers, Pharmacy
Technicians, Social Service Workers, Public Safety and Emergency Management
professionals, and experts in Athletic Therapy and Exercise Science and Health
Promotion. The SCHC spans 84,000 square feet and serves approximately 1,800 students each year. The building also features state-of-the-art teaching labs that immerse students in realistic settings.
Davis Campus Student Learning Commons (CSI Building)
Sheridan's new Davis Campus student learning commons is a three-storey,
66,000-square-foot building centre to improve and expand library and study
spaces. 36,000-square-feet of the new centre is dedicated to a library and
learning commons, while the remaining 30,000-square-feet houses classrooms and labs.
