The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Awards Community Grant to Love Heals in New York, NY
New York, NY, April 8, 2009 — The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from Brown Rudnick LLP, today announced that it has awarded a Community Grant to Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education in New York, New York.
Love Heals is a non-profit organization that empowers New York’s young people in the fight against HIV. As part of Love Heals’ Leadership Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP) for Girls, the grant will be used for the Spanish translation of an educational booklet entitled: “Talking with Your Daughter about Sex & HIV Prevention.” The booklet contains information on adolescent development and offers ways to foster parent-child communication during the adolescent and teenage years. The booklet will be distributed during the LEAP program to accommodate the youth participants whose parents are Spanish-only speakers.
In 2006, Love Heals launched the Leadership Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP) for Girls in response to increasing rates of HIV among young women of color in New York City. The program focuses on neighborhoods in Harlem, the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn that have felt the greatest impact from the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Partnering with individual schools and community-based organizations, LEAP for Girls provides young women of color between the ages of 12 and 18 with training in leadership skills as well as information on HIV/AIDS prevention and reproductive health issues.
Love Heals Facilitator and grant applicant, Inacent Joy Saunders, states, “The Community Grant fills a significant need within LEAP for Girls and will make a substantial difference in our ability to effectively educate Spanish-speaking New York City youth and their parents. We are grateful for the support of organizations such as the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., commented, “This booklet will encourage dialogue between parents and children and will enable them to discuss sensitive and important issues. I am pleased that the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp. can help Love Heals produce this educational material, which will help raise awareness of HIV/AIDS within Spanish-speaking communities in New York.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, Providence or New York within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month.
