Though misunderstood at first, Doctors Without Borders’ bold decision to stop accepting tsunami-relief donation could help revive public trust in nonprofits.

It’s not something you see every day, especially in the wake of a natural disaster: a nonprofit organization turning away donations.

But there it was, on the Doctors Without Borders, USA/Médecins Sans Frontières Web site:

“We have received an extraordinary outpouring of support for the people of South Asia and we are extremely grateful. … As you know, it is very important to MSF that we use your contribution as you intend it to be used. MSF estimates that we have received sufficient funds for our currently unforeseen emergency response in South Asia. … We kindly request that you contribute to our general Emergency Relief Fund, which is enabling our quick response to the current disaster in South Asia as well as humanitarian needs in war-torn Darfur, Sudan, and elsewhere in the more than 70 countries where MSF is working around the world. …”

Organizational Structure: MSF has sections in 18 countries. Five sections (Belgium, France, Holland, Spain and Switzerland) are considered “operational” and decide when, where and what medical relief is necessary. The remaining 13 sections (Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Luxemborg, Norway, Sweden, U.K. and U.S.) are “non-operational” and are responsible for raising funds, recruiting volunteers and educating the public about populations in danger. The United States however, jointly operates programs with France.

The History: MSF was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed that “all people have the right to medical care regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders.”
