Tides Hosts Country's Leading Social Changemakers and Philanthropists at "Momentum" Thought Leader Conference
SAN FRANCISCO, September 3, 2009 — 300 of the country's top philanthropists, thought leaders and social entrepreneurs will focus on how to drive innovation and change in these challenging economic times at Momentum (http://www.momentumconference.org/), Tides’ annual thought leader conference for progressive social changemakers and philanthropists taking place September 7 – 9 at the W Hotel.
Convened by San Francisco-based Tides (www.tides.org), Momentum brings together some of the world’s most innovative thinkers and dedicated activists for discussion and action on the most critical issues facing society today – including healthcare reform, the economy, the environment and immigration policy.
Featuring three days of incisive, 20-minute presentations from a diverse array of accomplished leaders, influencers and visionaries from around the globe, along with film premiers, art exhibits, musical performances and networking events, Momentum speakers include: NAACP President Benjamin Jealous, Congresswoman Donna Edwards, innovation expert and “Mr. Creativity” John Kao, environmental activist Adam Werbach, Service Employees International Union Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger, Green For All CEO Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell, and many others. “The need for progressive and innovative solutions to our greatest challenges is more critical than ever, and we are proud that Momentum serves as a catalyst both for ideas and action,” said Tides Founder and CEO Drummond Pike. “By bringing together passionate and effective leaders who are advancing and funding solutions to society's most pressing problems, we are helping to advance and accelerate progressive social change.”
Now in its fourth year, Momentum launched Laurie David’s StopGlobalWarming.org, served as the catalyst for Annie Leonard’s Story of Stuff and featured Bay Area serial social entrepreneur-turned White House “Green Jobs Czar” Van Jones before he became a household name.
Momentum is convened by San Francisco-based Tides (www.tides.org). Providing philanthropic services, nonprofit infrastructure, and strategic counsel since its founding in 1976, Tides has granted more than $108 million in 2008 alone to thousands of social change organizations across the country and around the globe.
