TNPA Foundation Opens Leading EDGE Internship Program Enrollment for Washington, D.C., Employers
The Nonprofit Alliance Foundation (TNPAF) has opened enrollment for employers to host Leading EDGE interns during the Summer 2023 cohort. Nonprofit organizations and firms that work with nonprofits can now enroll to host student interns from local colleges and universities in the Washington D.C. area. By hosting Leading EDGE interns, employers become part of the program’s efforts to elevate the visibility of college-age job candidates, particularly those in underrepresented and first-generation student populations, and enable first job placements that can lead to a career path in the social good sector.
“We are so excited to expand this partnership opportunity to more area employers looking to diversify the sector and reach their own employee recruitment goals,” says Shelby Truxon, Director, Internship Experience at TNPAF.
The Leading EDGE internship program completed a successful pilot last summer. For 10 weeks over the summer of 2022, five university students were placed with area employers to learn about the nonprofit sector. Host organizations such as Further Digital, The ALS Association, Mal Warwick Donordigital, PMG, and The Nonprofit Alliance worked with TNPAF to provide:
- Hands-on learning experiences in government affairs, digital marketing, direct marketing, fundraising, and volunteer recruitment and development.
- On-site activities such as field trips to meet senators, company retreats, and hanging out with colleagues after work.
- Professional development through bi-weekly lunch chats, a virtual “Speed Mentoring” event, and a webinar panel on “What I Wish I Knew.”
“This truly was a partnership effort between us and each employer who hosted an intern last summer,” states Truxon. “We now plan to duplicate those efforts with employer-hosts for our summer 2023 interns to not only provide a great student experience, but also help those employers who might need assistance with starting or building onto their own internship programs.”
Former host Polly Papsadore, Senior VP of Business Strategy at PMG, shared, “What a fun and rewarding way to share our nonprofit fundraising world with bright, high-achieving young people! Kudos to the TNPAF team for finding qualified candidates, adding structure to the program and providing guidance along the way. I especially appreciated the "check in" with the other intern host teams which provided some great ideas to enhance the internship experience for both our company and our intern.”
Olivia Eley, currently a marketing major in her junior year at the University of Maryland and PMG’s summer intern, shared similar comments about her internship experience. “I felt like I really gained a support group. I know everyone really wants me to succeed in my future endeavors and guided me into the nonprofit sector. I will be forever grateful for such a wonderful program!”
Enrollment is now open for employers to host a Leading EDGE intern next summer 2023. For more information, visit https://tnpa.org/leading_edge/employer-faq/.
