Branding: Where Are You From?
"A brand is nothing but an identifier, a differentiator, a trust mark, a persona, a story. It seeks to build relationships with its customers through its various associations. Now most of these associations need to be built over time for new brands unless there is an association that is handed down conveniently by an umbrella brand. But there is one association which brands can latch onto at times without having to try at all. And that association is based on geography, the place-of-origin of the brand. For instance, perfumes are instantly associated with France. So even though a perfume brand may not be better than an American one, the simple fact that it comes from France can tilt customer opinion in its favour.
