Charities Find There’s a Market for Compassion

April 6, 2010, NorthJersey.com — The recession is forcing non-profits to innovate in the search for revenue. Some have turned to technology, like Twitter and cellphone texting, to boost donations.

But for a consortium run by United Way branches in New Jersey, the innovation has taken a more entrepreneurial tack: marketing its existing 211 telephone help line to other states and expanding those services with its existing clients in New Jersey and the federal government.
