SXSW Interactive announces the honorees for the 2013 Dewey Winburne Community Service Award, which honors those who use technology to take on tough problems in the community: Madhura Bhat, co-founder of Health for America; Elizabeth Davidson, co-founder of ScriptEd; Arlene Ducao, coordinator of OpenIR; Rey Faustino,  founder of One Degree; Gene Gurkoff, founder of Charity Miles; Elena Lagoudi, a museum digital engagement worker; Simeon Oriko, founder of the Kuyu Project; Amanda Quraishi, Web manager of Mobile Loaves & Fishes; Ben Sawyer, co-founder of the Serious Games Initiative; and Rich Schwerdtfeger, CTO of accessibility at IBM Software.

Magazine Honors Philanthropic Innovators in Education, Arts

Creative philanthropic approaches to schooling in Los Angeles and the arts in Chicago won recognition in the 2012 Innovator of the Year Awards handed out by The Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Magazine. Eric Eisner, a former movie and music mogul who founded the Young Eisner Scholars program to help children from some of Los Angeles’ poorest neighborhoods get to college, was named the magazine’s Innovator of the Year in education.

Senators Dole and Daschle Announce 2012 Caring Award Winners

Senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle, co-chairs of the Caring Institute, announced the 2012 Caring Award winners. These six amazing adults and six extraordinary youths are being acknowledged for their efforts to give back to society. They will be commemorated at the Caring Awards Ceremony at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 24., where they will be inducted into the Caring Hall of Fame.
