IU Dance Marathon competes for national philanthropy award

After more than 20 years of hosting dance marathons on campus to raise money for the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana University Dance Marathon may soon find itself under a spotlight of its own.

At the beginning of the summer, StayClassy notified IUDM it was nominated for the Most Influential College Student or Organization for the third annual Classy Awards. StayClassy is an online social fundraising site that helps to promote
nonprofits.

Four Fundraisers Earn Highest Credential From AFP

Four fundraisers have earned the highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), from the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The newest ACFRE recipients are Sharon Gleason of Washington, D.C., director of development for the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, R. Scott Fortnum of Newmarket, Ontario, chief development officer for Saint Elizabeth Foundation, James K. Phelps of Vancouver, Wash., development director at the ACLU of Oregon, and Cecilia N. Soriano of Mission Viejo, Calif., who was most recently executive director of gift planning for University of California, Riverside.

Dubai Cares Named Stevie Company of the Year - Nonprofit or Government

Nonprofit Dubai Cares has been announced as the winner of the International Stevie Award for Company of the Year in the Non-Profit or Government Organization category in The 2011 International Business Awards. By winning, Dubai Cares will also be included in the public voting for People's Choice Stevie Awards for Favorite Companies, to be revealed at the 8th Annual International Business Awards in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 11, 2011. The awards are the only global, all-encompassing business awards program honoring great performances in business. 

Donate Movement Nominated for Most Effective Awareness Campaign by a Charity

The Donate Movement, a public awareness campaign powered by Goodwill, has been nominated for a CLASSY Award in the “Most Effective Awareness Campaign By A Charity” category. StayClassy presents the CLASSY awards — the largest philanthropic awards contest in the country — to recognize the most outstanding philanthropic achievements by nonprofits, businesses and individuals nationwide. From now until Aug. 26, public voting is open at http://classyawards.org for each of the 12 categories, and there are 25 finalists in each of those categories; six of those categories are strictly for nonprofits.

DMEF Announces 2011 Collegiate ECHO Winners

The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation announced the winners of the 2011 DMEF Collegiate ECHO Direct/Interactive Marketing Challenge, whose content was provided by charity: water, an international nonprofit that provides clean drinking water to communities worldwide that are deprived of access.

The winners of the DMEF’s 2011 Collegiate ECHO Challenge are:

• Gold (1st place)/Undergraduate: Christopher Newport University
• Gold (1st place)/Graduate: Eastern Michigan University

• Silver (2nd place)/Undergraduate: Oklahoma State University
• Silver (2nd place)/Graduate: Eastern Michigan University

Williams-Sonoma Named Corporate Partner of the Year by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Williams-Sonoma Inc. was recognized as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Corporate Partner of the Year during the presentation of the ALSAC/St. Jude Volunteer Appreciation Awards on June 24. St. Jude honored partners, volunteers and donors from across the country at the annual event.

Williams-Sonoma has raised more than $15.5 million for St. Jude through the annual Thanks and Giving fundraising campaign since 2005. In 2010, Williams-Sonoma Inc. associates collected $4.1 million during the campaign through its Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, PBteen, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma Home stores, catalogs and websites.

OPM honors charitable giving efforts

The 2010 Combined Federal Campaign raised more than $281.5 million for charities, and Tuesday federal employees got their kudos at a White House ceremony. Those efforts yielded only less than half-percent of the record-setting 2009 results of $282.6 million.

The Office of Personnel Management praised the campaign, noting its success despite a tough economic year and an overall drop in the nation’s charitable giving.

On Tuesday, OPM’s John Berry honored 26 CFC personnel and volunteers, recognizing 11 individuals, nine campaigns with the largest increase in pledges from 2009, and five campaigns for their innovation.
