Ex-Head of Maine Nonprofit to Plead Guilty in $4.6 Million Bank, Tax Fraud

The former head of a midcoast area charity accused of stealing more than $4.6 million earmarked for the organization is scheduled to plead guilty to federal charges on May 29.

Russell "Rusty" Brace is expected to appear in U.S. District Court and enter guilty pleas to one count of bank fraud and two counts of tax fraud, according to Brace's attorney Peter DeTroy.

Once the pleas are entered, the U.S. Probation Office will compile a pre-sentencing report and then both the defense and prosecution will make their recommendations concerning what sentence Brace should receive.

Crowdfunded Campaigns for Nepal Are Huge—Is That a Good Way to Give?

Crowdfunding was widely popular in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy. But the magnitude of mini-campaigns for the Nepal disaster is unprecedented, says Amy Sample Ward, CEO of a nonprofit technology organization called NTEN.

GoFundMe alone has more than 700 individual campaigns and 45,000 donors who've collectively raised $3.5 million for Nepal. And Todi's campaign on Indiegogo Life is one of more than 100. Some of Ward's own friends on Facebook are simply asking for people to send donations to their bank accounts.

What Does It Really Mean to Be an Engaged Donor?

I interview nonprofit donors all the time, young and old, to discover the reasons they give, get involved and spend time with the causes dear to them.

One question in particular generates a different answer each time I ask it: How involved are you with the organizations you support?

Although one might expect the responses to that question to be pretty similar, I've found they generally fall into one of three categories:

Response No. 1: I am fairly involved in the organizations I support and closely follow what they're up to on social media and through their newsletters...
