Foundation Support for Black Men and Boys Grows Sharply, Study Says

Giving for causes benefiting black males more than doubled from 2010 to 2012, according to a new report.

"Quantifying Hope: Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys," released today by the Foundation Center and the Campaign for Black Male Achievement, explores grant-making trends for major foundations from 2003 to 2012. In 2012, the latest year for which the data were available, 98 foundations made grants totaling $64.6 million specifically designed to benefit black men and boys, up from $40.4 million in 2011 and $28.6 million in 2010.

The Association of Nonprofit Executives (ANPE) announced Marcee Metzger, executive director of Voices of Hope, has won the 2014 ANPE Nonprofit Executive of the Year Award. The award, sponsored by U.S. Bank, was presented at the annual ANPE awards luncheon at the Cornhusker Marriott. Hillary Clinton on Sunday resigned from the board of the Clinton Foundation to focus on her just-launched presidential campaign, POLITICO has learned.

Clinton announced her resignation in an email to the foundation's employees Sunday afternoon, not long after launching her presidential campaign with a digital media blitz.

"While I have cherished my time serving on the board and engaging in the day-to-day work of the Foundation, in order to devote myself to this new, all-encompassing endeavor, I have resigned from the Board of Directors effective today," she wrote in an email obtained by POLITICO.

Cooper Union Inquiry Puts Nonprofits on Notice

In what should be a ringing alarm for nonprofit boards across the country long accustomed to minimal scrutiny or accountability, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman of New York has signaled that the laissez-faire approach to nonprofit governance is over.

Mr. Schneiderman's office has sent letters to the board members of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, the prestigious college founded in Manhattan in 1859 by the philanthropist Peter Cooper on the premise that it be "open and free to all." Last year, after the school said it faced financial ruin otherwise, it began charging tuition.

Charities Seek Donations in Bitcoin

Charities are often open to all sorts of donations, whether in money or in kind. Now they're turning to a new source: donations of bitcoin.

Among the charities soliciting donations from bitcoin users are Save the Children, an aid agency that receives hundreds of millions of dollars in donations every year, American Red Cross and Greenpeace.
