Some iconic publications by charities like Consumer Reports and Guideposts may decide to publish less frequently in print because of unexpectedly large postage increases due to take effect next month. Under the new rates, which will take effect April 26 if approved by the Postal Rate Commission, Guideposts will cost nearly 10 percent more to mail while postage on Consumer Reports and its three spin-off publications will increase by 8.5 percent to more than 16 percent.

It would be risky for homelessness charities to use less stereotypical images of homeless people in their fundraising materials because they would not match up with the images in the minds of potential donors, according to new research. In a report published last month in the journal Sociological Research Online, Jon Dean, lecturer in politics and sociology at Sheffield Hallam University, said he'd found that most people think of homeless people as being lone, bearded men begging and sleeping on the streets.

Nonprofit leaders in the Philadelphia region aren't feeling too positive about their current positions due to the lagging engagement from their boards, according to a new study. Nearly 59 percent of respondents said they're feeling "stressed," "exhausted," and "anxious and worried," according to The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University's School of Business that surveyed 231 executive directors.

Nonprofits have a new opportunity to own a piece of the Internet. Starting Tuesday, charities around the world are eligible to register for website addresses with the domains dot-ngo and dot-ong. The new domains, which will be granted only to active, independent, nonpolitical nonprofits that meet eligibility requirements are intended to lend credibility to legitimate charities vying for attention and donations online, according to Public Interest Registry, the nonprofit organization in charge of managing the domains.
