Half of Nonprofits Plan to Add Jobs This Year, Study Finds

Employment growth is expected to remain strong at nonprofits, with 50 percent planning to add jobs this year, according to a survey released Wednesday. That figure tops recent estimates for job growth in the business world ­— and indicates that turnover will intensify at charities.

This year’s hiring plans would essentially mirror what happened last year, when 49 percent of nonprofits increased the size of their staffs, according to a survey of 362 nonprofits in the U.S. and Canada conducted by Nonprofit HR, a consulting firm in Washington.

In February, the House of Representatives passed several tax bills and the Senate Finance Committee approved several tax bills that, if ultimately enacted, would impact tax-exempt organizations. The House bills would reduce the excise tax on the net investment income of private foundations. It also would extend and make permanent the temporary provisions applicable to IRA charitable distributions, conservation easements and contributions of food inventory, as well as the basis rules for stockholders of S corporations making charitable contributions of property.

Giving at a place of worship is the top venue for donors who are white, African-American and Hispanic. Asian donors, however, are more likely to give to health charities. Local social service and children’s charities are also priorities for Asian donors.

There is quite a disparity in how donors prioritize giving when analyzed by ethnicity. A new study by technology firm Blackbaud, “Diversity in Giving, The Changing Landscape of American Philanthropy,” shows various significant differences.

The report includes donor demographics from all 2014 Kimbia-powered giving day and crowdfunding events, including the industry’s largest events such as Give Local America®, which raised $53.7 million in its inaugural event; sixth annual North Texas Giving Day, which raised $26.3 million; GiveMN’s sixth annual Give to the Max Day, which raised $18.3 million; and third annual Columbia University Giving Day, which raised $11.1 million. The data shows that crowdfunding donors span all age groups and that the majority of donors have high net worth, are highly educated and use multiple channels, making them ideal donors for stewardship. Additionally, individual events have drawn from 25 percent to 68 percent new or reactivated donors and inspired major donors to give multimillion-dollar donations.

Survey: Nonprofit Professionals Anticipate Another Year of Revenue Increases

(Press release, March 3, 2015) — For the second year in a row, approximately three-quarters of the nonprofit professionals surveyed at the annual Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (GWSCPA) Nonprofit Finance & Accounting Symposium indicated that they expect their nonprofit organizations to grow. Seventy-seven percent of the respondents expect growth and increased revenues in 2015, compared to 76 percent last year. The percentage of respondents reporting improved current financial health rose to 63 percent, up from 57 percent in last year’s survey. The environment for nonprofits has improved to the point that one in five survey respondents see 2015 as an opportune moment to launch a capital campaign.
