MacArthur Foundation Recognizes 9 Nonprofits for Exceptional Creativity and Effectiveness

(Press release, Feb. 4, 2015) — The MacArthur Foundation named nine organizations as recipients of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. The award, which recognizes exceptional nonprofit organizations that are engaged in the foundation’s core fields of work and helps ensure their long-term sustainability, provides each organization with $350,000 to $1 million, depending on the size of its budget.

After testifying to the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen told reporters that revised regulations governing nonprofit political activity might not be issued in time for the next election cycle. “It’s not clear when we’re going to be able to get to it. My only focus on 2016 is to make sure that whatever we do, it doesn’t look like we’re trying to influence the 2016 election.”

3-Day March to Show Why Charities Need Overhead Aid Is Postponed

Dan Pallotta, the marketing executive who has been leading a campaign to get donors to stop evaluating charities based on their overhead costs, announced in August he was planning a three-day, 60-mile walk next June to raise $1 million to defend nonprofits against critics of their spending. In a news release sent to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, it was relayed that the three-day march planned for June 2015 has been postponed.

The report includes overall giving data from nearly 5,000 nonprofit organizations representing $16.2 billion in total fundraising and online giving data from nearly 4,000 nonprofits representing $2 billion in online fundraising from 2014.

Mom Claims Nonprofit Negligent in Mentally Disabled Daughter's Molestation Case

The mother of a mentally disabled woman claims a Southern California nonprofit was negligent in hiring a job coach who would eventually plead no contest to molesting her daughter. Rosie Clinton said a moment in October 2010 changed the course of her daughter's life forever.

"This incident changed her whole persona," Clinton said of her now 43-year-old daughter, who four years ago had been getting services through PathPoint Inc., a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit agency specializing in helping disabled adults assimilate to ordinary life.

Woman to Serve More Than a Year for SEAL Charity Theft

The wife of a Navy SEAL was sentenced Monday to a year and six months in prison for stealing more than $120,000 from a charity that helps SEALs and their families during times of crisis. Tammy Mason pleaded guilty last year to embezzling from her employer, the Navy SEAL Foundation. Prosecutors say she used the money for lavish personal expenses.
