Highlights From the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy

As Forbes unveiled its Forbes 400 list of the richest people in America, it also released highlights from its Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy.

On June 26, 161 billionaires and near-billionaires gathered at the New York Public Library for The Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy, the greatest-ever meeting of its kind. Oprah Winfrey kicked off the day, and Warren Buffett and Bill Gates also gave keynote talks. Melinda Gates, Diane Von Furstenberg and Jacqueline Novogratz headlined a panel about giving to women and girls.

Super PAC Mega-Donors Surpass 100, June Best Super PAC Fundraising Month Ever

Super PACs had their biggest fundraising month ever in June when they raised a combined total exceeding $54 million. In total, super PACs have raised $298 million in the 2012 election cycle, with the vast majority coming from mega-donors giving at least $500,000.

Seventy percent of all contributions to super PACs in the 2012 election cycle have come from donors giving $500,000 or more. They are led by billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, whose family has combined to give $37.75 million to super PACs through June.

WikiLeaks Reopens Channel for Credit Card Donations

After 18 months of having its funding nearly completely cut off by a payment industry blockade, WikiLeaks says it’s finally found a new workaround that allows it to receive credit card donations.

In a statement to press Wednesday morning, WikiLeaks writes that the Fund for the Defense of Net Neutrality (FDNN) has agreed to accept donations on behalf of WikiLeaks, and that the group can receive payments through the French payment card system Carte Bleue.

Social Score service provides nonprofits analysis and categorization of donors, volunteers, peer fundraisers and other constituents by measuring their level of influence and reach through publicly-available social media activities.

Forbes Unveils 48 Heroes of Philanthropy

Forbes unveiled its fifth annual roster of top philanthropists, and it includes a Korean who gave a huge swatch of unspoiled land to the Korea Forest Service, an Australian who opened a museum in Tasmania with some bizarre exhibits and a Singaporean woman who helped bring three dinosaur skeletons from the U.S. All 48 honorees are making their mark in their own way.
