A nonprofit effort to digitize the nation’s libraries and create a Digital Public Library of America won a $1 million federal grant Thursday from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will help form a new nonprofit organization and create the technical platform to share digital content across the nation’s many public libraries and archives. Digitizing books and building a system for libraries to contribute will take years, though, and millions more dollars from private partners, said endowment chairman Jim Leach.
Charitable giving by America’s biggest businesses rose slowly last year and shows little sign of gaining in 2012, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy study of 166 large companies.

Donations grew by 4 percent in 2011, according to the 115 companies that provided two years’ worth of data. That’s far less than the 13 percent rise from 2009 to 2010, when companies saw a sharp rebound in profits after the recession.

Rally.org, the social fundraising platform that helps anyone with a cause raise money, share their story and connect with supporters, announced that it raised $7.9 million in Series A venture capital online. The round was joined by Relay Ventures, Mike Maples of Floodgate Fund, Reid Hoffman of Greylock Partners, Kevin Rose of Google Ventures, Craig Shapiro of Collaborative Fund, and Angel investors: Michael Birch, Tim Ferriss, Eric Ries, Josh Spear, Scott Belsky, among others. Rally.org plans to use the money to continue hiring engineers and scale its technology platform.

Bloomberg Philanthropies, the private philanthropy of New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, has announced the launch of the Mayors Challenge, a $9 million competition to inspire American cities to generate innovative ideas that address major urban challenges and improve life for city dwellers.
Through the challenge, which kicks off this week, Bloomberg Philanthropies will award one $5 million grand prize and four $1 million prizes to the cities that come up with the boldest, most replicable ideas.
A multi-foundation effort to generate support for the PBS NewsHour has resulted in $3.55 million of special funding for the news program, according to MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, which produces the NewsHour. The participants in the initiative are Carnegie Corporation of New York, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
