Every year, the Direct Marketing Fundraisers Association holds its Package of the Year Awards to honor some of the best direct-mail and e-mail fundraising campaigns. This year's winners were announced in June, with Covenant House taking home the highest honor as the overall winner of Package of the Year.

The World's 100 Best NGOs, According to Global Journal

The Geneva, Switzerland-based magazine The Global Journal has just published its “first ranking of its kind” list of the “Top 100 Best NGOs.” It’s an unusual compilation in that the editors of this magazine acknowledge that they eschew quantitative metrics for a series of qualitative measures, which are as follows: innovation, effectiveness, impact, efficiency and value for money, sustainability, strategic and financial management, and peer review.

The Wikimedia Foundation came in at No. 1.

PepsiCo Foundation Expands Commitment to Water.org With $8 Million Grant

PepsiCo Foundation, the philanthropic arm of PepsiCo, and Water.org announced an expansion of their partnership to scale WaterCredit, a market-driven model that will provide micro loans to families throughout India. This expansion will help enable approximately 800,000 people to access safe water by March 2016. The commitment is built upon a long-standing partnership between the PepsiCo Foundation and Water.org and is made possible by an $8 million grant — the largest contribution by the foundation in its 50-year history.

Nonprofits Nominated for 'Webby' Awards

Conservation International, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Human Rights Watch are among the long list of nonprofits that have earned nominations for the annual Webby People’s Voice Awards.

The awards, which seek to recognize the best of the Internet, have long rewarded the work of big-budget media companies and Web startups.

While charities have a history of performing well at the 15-year-old contest, this year’s list of nonprofit nominees is particularly deep—even in categories that aren’t specifically set aside for nonprofits.

Giving for Japan Disaster Now Totals More Than $136-Million

Ten days after the devastating earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, American donors have contributed more than $136-million for relief efforts, according to a Chronicle tally. Nearly two-thirds of the total has been raised by one organization, the American Red Cross.

The rate of donations is slower than after last year’s earthquake in Haiti and after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Nine days after the disaster in Haiti, donors had contributed more than $355-million, and nine days after Katrina they had given more than $740-million.
